Primary current injection testing is utilised in high current/high voltage scenarios found at large electrical installations such as substations. A large current (between 100A and 20,000A depending on system specifications and test requirements) is injected directly on the primary side of the electrical system such as a circuit breaker. The objective of the test is to identify how the system operates under various levels of current load.
Primary injection testing is suitable for testing over-current trip relays attached to a circuit breaker. By injecting the current into the system we can measure if the breaker will trip or fail, and how long the current is live before the circuit is broken.
Circuit breakers can go long periods of time without activation, and failure at the moment of activation can cause catastrophic damage to the electrical system. Circuit breaker testing with primary current injection on a breaker that has not triggered in some time is the best way to recreate the real operating conditions of a current spike.
TEST-905 5000A primary current injection test equipment adopts ARM Chip to control its output process and large capacity of toroidal transformers. It is equipped with LCD display and current meter; it can show primary current value, second current value, turn ratio and the action time. Packing is used as aluminum alloy body with PC panel. TEST-905 is mainly applied to CT turn ratio testing in the power system and contact resistance test which need large current. and CT , circuit breaker, Switch temperature rise testing.
This powerful test system is designed for primary injection testing of protective relay equipment and circuit breakers. It is also used to test the turns ratio of current transformers and for other applications that require high variable currents.
The system consists of a control unit and a current unit. The two parts are portable, and INGVAR can be quickly assembled and connected.
The control unit has many advanced features – a powerful measurement section for example, that can display turns ratio as well as time, voltage and current. A second measurement channel can be used to test an additional current or voltage. Current transformer turns ratio, impedance, power, power factor (cos φ) and phase angle are calculated and shown in the display. Current and voltage can be presented as percentages of nominal value. The fast-acting hold function freezes short-duration readings on the digital display when the voltage or contact signal arrives at the stop input, the object under test interrupts the current or injection is stopped.
The TEST-905 is a programmable AC high-current source designed specifically for utility-substation applications. This device is well suited for primary injection testing of protective relays. This versatile device can also be used for testing thermal, magnetic, and solid-state motor-protection relays and molded-case circuit-breakers, as well as any application that requires a high-current source.
Built-in Timer
The TEST-905’s built-in timer can test the time delay characteristics of protection relays and molded-case circuit-breakers. Once the test is initiated, the current source and the timer are automatically turned on at the next zero crossing point of the AC. The timer stops when the TEST-905 input detects a change in the dry contact or voltage input, or detects the removal of the test current. The test results are then displayed in milli-seconds and fractions of a cycle(s) on the unit’s back-lit LCD screen (20 characters by 4 lines).
External Current Input
The TEST-905 also has an external-current input (0 – 6 A). Both the internal current source amplitude and the external current source measurement readings can be viewed at the same time.
